🏖️ How to Make a Holiday Feel Like a Break (Even with Kids!)

If you’ve ever returned from a family holiday needing… another holiday, you’re not alone.

Travelling with kids is an amazing way to create lasting memories, but let’s be honest — it can be exhausting. The good news? With a few smart planning strategies, your next family trip can feel like a proper break — one where everyone gets to relax, recharge, and have fun (yes, even the adults).

Here’s how to make it happen:

1. Prioritise the right kind of destination

Not all family-friendly destinations are created equal. Look for places that offer:

  • Short transfers (ideally under 60 minutes from airport to hotel)

  • A mix of activities – something for the kids and moments of calm for you

  • Good infrastructure – think medical care, clean beaches, safe areas, and child-friendly restaurants

  • A slower pace – avoid cities with hectic public transport or lots of logistics

2. Choose accommodation that works for you

Where you stay can make or break a family trip. Ideally, you want somewhere that takes some of the pressure off.

Look for:

  • Kids’ clubs (even just 1-2 hours a day gives parents breathing space)

  • Suites or apartments (so you're not whispering in the dark after bedtime)

  • On-site dining and snack options

  • Proximity to a beach or pool

Sometimes, a well-run resort is the smartest choice — especially one with childcare or play areas. A travel advisor can help you find one that suits your family’s vibe and budget.

3. Don’t overschedule

It’s tempting to fill every day with sightseeing, but it’s okay to take it slow. Alternate busy and relaxed days. Build in nap breaks. Leave room for downtime by the pool or a lazy lunch that turns into an afternoon of gelato and wandering.

Let go of the pressure to "see it all" — you’re already making memories.

4. Pack smart (and light-ish)

Make a list. Then cut it in half. Most family-friendly destinations have shops if you forget something — you don’t need your entire home in your suitcase.

👜 Pack:

  • A few versatile outfits

  • Favourite snacks

  • Activities for the journey (stickers, colouring, tablets with headphones)

  • Familiar items to help with sleep (a blanket or toy)

Bonus: Consider packing a lightweight travel stroller, even for older toddlers.

5. Treat yourself, too

Yes, it’s about the kids — but it’s also about you. Book a massage. Sneak in a sunset drink. Choose a hotel that makes mornings easy so you can enjoy your coffee in peace.

This is your holiday, too — and you deserve to come back feeling like yourself again.
