Trying to choose between an Airbnb, a hotel, or an all-inclusive resort for your next trip? You’re not alone — I have been there so many times. And if you’ve got a Pinterest board full of dreamy escapes but no idea what’s actually right for you and your travel style, this one’s for you.

Whether you're a couple looking for connection and convenience, or a family planning a much-needed escape that won’t leave you more tired than when you left — here’s how to pick the best fit for your next adventure.

all-inclusive resort

🏠 Airbnb or Holiday Rentals

Best for: Independent travellers, explorers, families needing space

Pros:

  • Feels like a home away from home (great for kids and home bodies!)

  • Usually more space — handy if you want a separate bedroom or a proper kitchen

  • Good for longer stays or if you want to immerse yourself in local life

Cons:

  • Less support — no front desk or concierge to call when something goes wrong

  • Can involve more planning (finding groceries, cleaning, etc.)

  • Sometimes hidden fees add up quickly

Ideal for: Families who value comfort and flexibility, especially when travelling with little ones who need naps, snacks, and a bit of routine. Also great for couples wanting to live like a local in a romantic flat in Lisbon or a cosy cabin in Iceland. I did this last summer in Málaga with my husband and it was just perfect for that trip!

🛎️ Hotels

Best for: City breaks, short getaways, couples or families wanting balance

Pros:

  • Easy check-in/check-out, daily cleaning, toiletries included

  • Great locations, especially in cities

  • Concierge, breakfast included, and sometimes child-friendly facilities

Cons:

  • Less space than a rental — rooms can feel cramped

  • Can be pricey depending on location and extras

Ideal for: Couples a stylish city break, or families doing a weekend getaway where convenience is king and you don’t want to lift a finger. I found this to be the perfect fit when visiting Toronto earlier this year!

🌴 All-Inclusive Resorts

Best for: Relaxation seekers, parents needing a break, milestone trips

Pros:

  • Everything is covered — food, drinks, entertainment, even kids’ clubs

  • Budget-friendly once you factor in the “all-in” nature

  • Often offer activities for all ages, from spa days to snorkelling and shows

Cons:

  • Less flexibility to explore outside the resort

  • Not always the most “authentic” travel experience

  • Can get busy and crowded during peak periods

Ideal for: Busy parents who want to finally relax, or couples who just want to be without planning every meal. All-inclusives are often underestimated — but the right one can offer true ease and indulgence without the eye-watering price tag. Highly recommend for those paradise vibe trips where you just let go and be!

💡 So… Which One Should You Choose?

The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. It depends on how you like to travel, who you’re travelling with, and what you need from this particular trip.

Some trips call for local charm and flexibility. Others need a smooth, stress-free experience with zero admin. The key is knowing what’s right for you, not just what looks good online.
